Albert Einstein (1879–1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist who developed the special and general theories of relativity and received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect. He emigrated to the United States in 1933, worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and made foundational contributions to quantum theory and cosmology.
