Assata Shakur

Assata Shakur (born JoAnne Chesimard in 1947) is an African American activist and a former member of the Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army. She was convicted in 1977 of murder in New Jersey, escaped prison in 1979, and has lived in Cuba under political asylum; her memoir recounts her activism and imprisonment.
