Herman Hesse
Hermann Hesse (1877–1962) was a German-born Swiss novelist, poet and painter, awarded the 1946 Nobel Prize in Literature for his influential novels exploring the individual's search for meaning, notably Siddhartha, Steppenwolf and Narcissus and Goldmund. The quote "Discord is the great teacher." echoes Hesse's recurring emphasis on inner conflict and transformation in his work.
