Indira Gandhi (1917–1984) was an Indian politician who served as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. As leader of the Indian National Congress, she implemented agricultural and economic reforms and declared a national Emergency in 1975, becoming a central and controversial figure.
