Roger Bannister (1929–2018) was an English middle-distance runner and neurologist who became the first person to run a mile in under four minutes on 6 May 1954. He later pursued a medical career in neurology, served as Master of Pembroke College, Oxford, and was knighted for his services to sport and medicine.
