Wilma Rudolph (1940–1994) was an American sprinter who overcame childhood polio to become the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field at a single Olympics, at Rome 1960. After retiring she worked as a teacher, coach and youth advocate and remained a prominent figure in American athletics.
